The bass-baritone Havard Stensvold was born in Oslo. He studied at the Royal Opera Academy in Copenhagen with Professor Susanna Eken and at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory.
His engagements at the Norwegian National Opera have included Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Schaunard in La bohème, Palémon in Thaïs and Zuniga in Carmen.
Other opera engagement include Masetto in Don Giovanni and Mercurio / Famigliaro II / Littore and Tribuno II in L’Incoronazione di Poppea at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, Polyphemos in Handel’s Acis and Galatea at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der alten Musik and at the Early Music Festival in Bruges, Il Commenadatore and Masetto in Don Giovanni at the Drottningholm Festival in Stockholm, the title role in Don Giovanni at Krakow Opera, Brander in La damnation de Faust in Bergen (in a cast including Bryn Terfel and Christine Rice), Purcell’s The Indian Queen in Antwerp and Bruges, Faraone in Fago’s Il Faraone Sommerso in Spain, Italy, Poland and Salzburg, Garzia in Ariosti’s La Fede nei tradimenti in Krakow, Schaunard in La bohème at Oscarsborg Opera Festival, Zebul in Handel’s Jephtha in Stavanger, the title role in Don Giovanni in staged performances with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte at the Fynske Opera in Odense, Denmark, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro in Copenhagen, Marullo in Rigoletto at the Nordland Music Festival, Norway and Monterone in Rigoletto with Opera South.
Havard Stensvold regularly works with conductors such as Frank Agsteribbe, Giovanni Antonini, Fabio Biondi, Lukasz Borowicz, Roland Böer, Francesco Corti, Marcus Creed, Sir Andrew Davis, Patrick Fournillier, Paul Goodwin, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Manfred Honeck, Rubén Jais, Sigiswald Kuijken, Andrew Litton, Andrew Manze, Nicholas McGegan, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Andrew Parrott, Grete Pedersen, Michel Plasson, Lawrence Renes, Andreas Spering, Mark Tatlow, Robin Ticciati and Bruno Weil.
He is one of Norway’s most sought after concert, oratorio and recital singer, regularly also appearing internationally. He has a vast repertoire with a wide range of music.
He spends considerable time singing contemporary music and we should mention his appearance in world premieres of Baritone in Cecilie Ore’s Dead beat escapement, The Wooden Soldier in Bengt Perry’s The Doll doctor and Bo Berg, the leading role in Knut Vaage’s Khairos, all at the Norwegian National Opera, Kjell Habbestad’s opera The Maid of Norway in Bergen, Norway, David in the world premiere of Staale Kleiberg’s David and Bathsheba in Trondheim, Svend Hvidtfelt Nielsen opera The little Mermaid, The Soldier in the world premiere of Palmar Johansen’s Madonna Furiosa and one of the leading roles in the world premiere of Anitra Tumsevica’s opera Red in Bodoe.
Recent engagements include Bach’s Mass in B minor with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Bach’s St Mark Passion in Potsdam and Arnstadt, Fauré’s Requiem with Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Bergen, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle in Trondheim and Roros, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung in Oslo as well as in Bergen, and Bach’s St Mark Passion in Oslo.
